IHG Hotels & Resorts partners with Ant Group to promote green actions among members and customers

IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, today announced that it has joined Ant Group’s Green Energy Initiative to encourage its IHG One Rewards members in Greater China to use less single-use toiletries to protect the environment.

Customers at participating hotels in Greater China are encouraged to skip single-use toiletries during their hotel stays. As a reward, customers will receive green energy points in the Alipay Ant Forest mini-program within the Alipay app.

 

Through this partnership, IHG encourages IHG One Rewards members in Greater China staying at participating IHG hotels to opt out of single-use toiletries in their rooms, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and soap. By doing so, they can obtain 92 grams of green energy in the Alipay Ant Forest mini-program within the Alipay app after 72 hours of checking out. According to calculation by professional environmental institution China Beijing Environmental Exchange (“CBEEX”), the action translates into 92 grams of carbon emission reduction.

 

The green energy points can be used to support various conservation projects. If all of IHG One Rewards members in Greater China take one such action every year, it would generate 1,380 tons of green energy points in Alipay Ant Forest. These green energy points can be used to plant 77,000 saxaul trees in areas threatened by desertification. Users can also use these green energy points to support other environmental projects.

Launched in 2016, Alipay Ant Forest is a green initiative that encourages users to adopt low-carbon actions in their daily lives and has attracted over 650 million participants. Users can gain green energy points by taking low-carbon actions, including biking to work instead of driving and paying electricity bills online instead of offline. These green energy points can be used to support initiatives implemented by environmental organizations and funded by Ant Group, including tree planting, biodiversity protection, and coastal ecosystem restoration.

 

The Green Energy Initiative, which features green energy points in Alipay Ant Forest, is open to brands that would like to offer their customers more incentives to adopt green actions. As of August 2022, the initiative has attracted participation from more than 500 brands across multiple sectors, including travel, packaging and home appliance manufacturing.
